The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is working to increase access to justice throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through our support they are developing a community paralegal model in the Maniema province and are working to bring justice to communities impacted by large-scale mining in South Kivu, DRC.
ABA ROLI is working to increase knowledge among human rights and community-based organizations on the legal and human rights held by individuals and communities. They are developing a paralegal model that trains Congolese citizens to provide immediate legal services to those affected by violence. They are also working in communities impacted by large-scale mining, helping to identify industry best practices and addressing their sustainable development needs. It is expected that by building their capacity in this way, NGOs and community-based organizations will be better positioned to assert their rights before judicial and non-judicial institutions.
